This two-day clowning workshop offers a joyful and practical introduction to clown through listening, play, and genuine connection with an audience. Drawing on the pedagogy of Philippe Gaulier, the work centres on presence rather than performance, and on discovering how humour emerges when we respond honestly to what is happening in the room.
Across the two days, participants will explore direct audience interaction: noticing them, acknowledging them, and allowing their reactions to guide the work. Through simple improvisations and structured exercises, we will develop sensitivity to rhythm, pleasure, and timing — learning when to continue, when to stop, and when to change direction.
The workshop encourages a spirit of openness and curiosity. Rather than aiming to be funny, participants are invited to listen deeply, play generously, and embrace vulnerability as a source of connection and freedom. Failure is treated as useful information, not something to avoid, and play is valued over ideas or techniques.
This workshop is suitable for actors, physical theatre-makers, comedians, and performers interested in developing their relationship with an audience and deepening their sense of play. Previous experience with clown is welcome but not required — only a willingness to show up, listen, and enjoy the game.
